Man arrested for defrauding Newmont Ghana

Akatsi (V/R), June 14, GNA- Darlington Dovi, 27, an Electrical Technician who had been on the Police wanted list for allegedly defrauding Newmont Ghana Limited, a mining company, of 700 million cedis has been nabbed.

A source close to the Volta Regional Police Command told the Ghana News Agency that Dovi was picked up at a funeral at Whute, a farming community near Akatsi upon a tip off. He said Dovi worked for the company for two years until he was retrenched in 2004.

The source said during the period of lay-off, the company occasionally engaged him on contract to undertake routine maintenance work at the company’s Head office and residences of executives. He said Dovi submitted various invoices from August 2005 to January 2006, covering 700 million cedis for work he allegedly undertook and was paid.

The source said the company later detected that the suspect had been wrongfully paid for no work done and the police were contacted to assist in tracking him.

He said Dovi promised to refund the amount but absconded until he was arrested by Police detectives while busily engaged in an ‘agbadza’ dance at a funeral.

He has since been handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Accra for further investigations.
