Mahama swears in two Supreme Court Judges

President John Mahama has sworn in two Supreme Court Judges. A ceremony to officially make public their appointment was held at the Flagstaff House today.

The two, Justice Yaw Appau and Gabriel Pwamang were nominated for appointment as Justices of the Supreme Court by the President in accordance with the Article 144 (2) of the 1992 Constitution and and communicated same to Parliament on May 12, 2015.

The nominations were subsequently referred to the Appointments Committee for consideration and report to the plenary.

The Committee chaired by the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Ebo Barton-Odro in presenting his report was full of praise for Apau and Pwamang for exhibiting professionalism in their work.

It particularly lauded Appau, an Appeals Court Judge for his ruling in the Yaa Na, Sodom and Gomorrah and the Stadium disaster cases.

The 27-page report was also applauded Pwamang, a private legal practioner for being one of great repute and handling with distinction controversial cases, especially, with regards to electoral reforms.

Justice Yaw Appau during his engagement with the committee over the Yaa Naa case said he finds it very difficult to say that the matter has come to an end.

He however conceded that based on the facts that were brought before him, the matter has been adjudicated upon but if there are any suppressed facts which the court was not made aware of by way of evidence, then it would be difficult to say that the case has come to a closure.
