Reports that stones were hurled at President John Dramani Mahama’s convoy are untrue, the secretary of the Ejisu branch of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Michael Brobbey, has said.
It emerged on Wednesday June 29, 2016 that the presidential convoy, making its way to the Ejisu municipality, where Mr Mahama was in the Ashanti Region, was attacked by stone-throwing residents of some communities including Esienimpong, Kwaaso, Asotwe, and Onwie.
But rejecting the report, Mr Brobbey said: “From where I stood at Onwe, I did not see a single stone [being thrown]. But can anyone hurl a stone at the convoy of the president of Ghana? That would be unwise,” he said.
According to Mr Brobbey who spoke on Accra100.5FM’s Ghana Yensom on Thursday June 30, residents had lined up along the road to reach out to the president that they were living in hardship and could not pay their utility bills.
To him, the allegation of attacks on the president’s convoy was a “lie”. He said the NDC government should rather be focused on improving the lot of citizens than peddling falsehood.
“Ghanaians are crying, Ghanaians are suffering, Ghanaians are frustrated, and some cannot pay their school fees… Ghanaians are suffering, this hardship is too much. Tell the NDC…they should think about solving the problems of Ghana, not this propaganda, lies…” he advised.
But NDC parliamentary aspirant for Ejisu constituency, Gloria Huze, speaking on the same programme, insisted the attacks occurred, saying some individuals from the areas mentioned had been mobilised to hoot at the president at the time he was scheduled to pass by, to create disaffection for his government and create the impression that he was not received warmly in the region.
But she said as President Mahama’s procession approached the area, many inhabitants from nearby communities rather trooped to welcome him and when the crowd hired to hoot at the president sensed their intended shouts of disapproval would be drowned by the cheers for Mr Mahama, they immediately switched to stone throwing.
