Twifo Praso (C/R) Nov. 22. GNA – Five Junior High Schools in the Twifo-Hemang-Lower-Denkyira District in the Central Region scored zero per cent in the 2008 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). They are Wamaso Zion, Antwikwaa D/A, Mfuom D/A, Bukuruso D/A and Ashire D/A junior high schools.
Mr. Samuel Agyeibie-Kessie, the District Chief Executive, said these at the assembly’s general meeting at Twifo Praso on Friday. He said the schools performed poorly partly because students did not take their studies seriously and their parents failed to live up to their parental responsibilities.
Mr. Agyeibie-Kessie said a study carried out by the District Directorate of Education revealed that most of the schools lacked teachers0 even though the admission rate in the district had increased due to the introduction of the Capitation Grant. He said the assembly would sponsor teacher trainees from the area who would return to their communities and teach to increase the number of teachers in the district which was 418 trained teachers and 998 untrained teachers.
Mr John W. Odoom, District Director of Education, who appeared before the assembly to answer questions on the poor performance, said the directorate had decided to intensify supervision in schools and re-vitalize the school management committees (SMC).
