President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has condemned the ongoing slave trade in Libya describing it as “gross and scandalous abuses of human rights.”
He also said the practice ongoing in the North African country is also “mockeries of the alleged solidarity of African nations grouped in the African Union (AU), of which Libya is a member.”
It has come to light that hundreds of Africans are being auctioned in modern-day slave markets in Libya for $400 per person as Libya is the main transit hub for illegal immigrants and refugees seeking to reach Europe.
Contributing to the barbaric act, Nana Akufo-Addo tweeted: “The current slave auctions of Africans in Libya are not only gross and scandalous abuses of human rights, but are also mockeries of the alleged solidarity of African nations grouped in the African Union (AU), of which Libya is a member.”
The ongoing act has been widely condemned across the world with a call on the African Union to step in to put an end to the menace.
Meanwhile, it has been disclosed that no Ghanaian has been sold as a slave in Libya. Some 168 Ghanaians detained in Libya had been arrested on illegal immigration charges and were already being held in the detention camps.
They have however been brought back home through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
