Bibiani (W/R), June 21, GNA – Participants at a district level consultative forum on the review of the constitution, held at Bibiani in the Western Region, unanimously endorsed the retention of the indemnity clause. They held the view that its repeal would not serve the growth of the nation’s democracy.
They said there was no need to revisit the past and that the country should move forward in peace and unity.
Attending the forum were traditional rulers, assembly members, representatives of the political parties, civil society organizations, and heads of department.
The election of District Chief Executives (DCEs’), decoupling of the position of Attorney General from that of the Minister of Justice, and the appointment of ministers from parliament, were among the issues that came up.
Majority of the contributors argued for a change of the current arrangement where DCEs’ are appointed by the President. They insisted that the DCEs’ should be elected to make them more accountable to the people.
Additionally, they wanted the position of the Attorney General to be separated from that of the Minister of Justice. Mr Agyapong Okumawuo, Presiding Member of Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai District Assembly, said it was important all Ghanaians participated in the constitution review process, to make it successful.
