Legon Security arrests suspected armed robbers

Accra, Jan. 24, GNA – The Security personnel of the University of Ghana, Legon on Tuesday arrested two suspected armed robbers at the Bush Canteen at Legon.

They were found to be in possession of a locally manufactured pistol with six bullets, three pieces of talisman and two rings. Speaking to the GNA, the Chief of Security, Major Adane Mensah (rtd) said a student of Legon, Mr Mawulom Aikins, who had earlier complained about his missing bag containing money, textbook and his student ID Card, found one John Arimze, a Nigeria, with the bag around the Bush Canteen.

He, therefore, accosted Arimze and asked him whether the bag belonged to him and he replied in the affirmative.

Mr Aikins with the help of other students searched the bag. Unfortunately for Arimze an ID Card belonging to Mr Aikins and a textbook bearing his name were found in the bag but an amount of 84,000 cedis, which Mr Aikins claimed was in the bag, was not found. The students, therefore, whisked him to the Legon Security Charge Office. During interrogation, the Security Officers, who were told that there was an accomplice, who had wanted to prevent the arrest of Arimze, quickly rushed to the area and arrested one William Okyere. During a struggle, five live bullets dropped from Okyere’s pocket so they took him to their office. When they got to the office one of the Security men said as Okyere was carrying bullets he must have an accompanying weapon.

The Security men then went back and searched the area where Okyere was arrested and found a locally manufactured pistol loaded with a live bullet lying on the ground.

When Okyere was searched at the Legon Security Charge Office, he was found to be wearing three amulets around his neck and two rings on two of his left fingers.

After the interrogation and searching, Arimze and Okyere were handed over to the Legon Police for further investigations.
