Lawyer commends NDC gov’t for smooth handover

Mr Oscar Vulor, a legal practitioner, at Hohoe has commended the for National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for a peaceful handover of power after the 2000 elections.

He mentioned Senegal, Benin and South Africa as some of the few countries on the continent that had successful transfers of power after elections.

Mr Vulor said this at the launch of the third celebration of the National Constitutional Week organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) at Hohoe.

He called for the independence of the legislature, the judiciary and the National Media Commission (NMC). ”These institutions must be adequately resourced and made to stand on their feet to enable them to discharge their duties effectively”, he said.

Mr Vulor commended Ghanaians for consolidating the constitutional process and said people should learn to be conversant with the provisions of the Constitution.

Mr James Dogbe, Hohoe District Chief Executive (DCE) who launched the week, called on Ghanaians not to relent in their efforts to sustain constitutional rule and urged them to take active part in transforming society.

He appealed to people in authority to lead lives worthy of emulation.

Mr Darling Mac-Agbe, acting Hohoe District Director of the NCCE, said the Commission was prepared to co-operate with other institutions to educate the people about their fundamental human rights and freedoms to enhance democratic and good governance in the country.

He appealed to the Hohoe District Assembly to support the Commission with logistics.
