The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and the La-Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA), have jointly organized a five-hour massive clean-up exercise at the La beach.
The exercise which was aimed at tidying the place to prevent diseases, was sponsored by LaDMA, with other inter-faith local churches in the municipality and the Landlord Association participating.
They swept and cleared filth along the Kpeshie Lagoon, La Beach Towers, Artists Alliance, Manledada and the landing beach of the La fisher-folks all within La-Dadekotopon Municipality.
Madam Rita Odoley Sowah, the LaDMA Municipal Chief Executive, said the issue of sanitation was dear to the Assembly, hence its support.
She said the Assembly would ensure that the health challenge that hit the Municipality last year would not recur, “therefore we are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the La township was rid of filth.”
She said as part of efforts to mitigate poor sanitation in the area, the Assembly had put premium on the National Sanitation Day, and had been observing it religiously.
Madam Sowah commended churches in the area for their efforts in contributing to address the sanitation challenge, saying: “You have really lived up to the saying that Cleanliness is next to Godliness.”
Mr Edward Karikari, the Public Affairs Director of the Christianborg Department of Latter-Day Saints, said the exercise was the ninth that the church had participated in, and it was observed simultaneously in 30 African countries from West Africa to South Africa.
He said the rationale for the exercise was based on three objectives – environmental health relief to the community, community encouragement and involvement in local assembly activities, and churches involvement in community services.
Mr Karikari expressed gratitude to the Assembly for the efforts devoted for the exercise and for providing the material and logistics support for the exercise.
