Land guards invades University of Ghana lands at Nungua

Accra, June 13, GNA – Members of staff of the University of Ghana Agricultural Research Centre at Nungua, embarked on a massive demonstration on the Legon campus, in protest against the encroachment of the centre’s land by estate developers.

They later converged at the office of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nii-Boye Tagoe and presented a three-page resolution signed by senior staff of the centre.

The resolution called for immediate action to stop the trespassers. The encroachment had led to the destruction of the grazing site for livestock and disrupted work at the centre. The resolution said media reports that government had released 60 per cent of the University’s lands to the Nungua stool, had escalated the encroachment.

It said the encroachment was threatening the lives of staff and their families.

Mr. Kofi Sawyer Ndamele, a Daft Animal Power Specialist, from the Centre told the Ghana News Agency, that the evading youth including armed land guards arrived at the Station on June 10 and dispersed livestock which were grazing.

This was followed by the destruction of fences and the demarcation of roads by bulldozers.

Prof. Tagoe assured the demonstrators that the university authorities would write a letter to the Inspector General of Police, for expeditious action to stop the encroachment
