Tema, April 4, GNA – A labourer who failed to pay for a banku meal he had bought, but rather became angry and fought the food vendor when she demanded the money, has been fined 10 million cedis by the Tema circuit court “A”.
Charles Kofi Anorvey, alias Taagoro, who pleaded guilty to intentionally and unlawfully causing harm, will go to jail for six years if he fails to pay the fine.
Chief Inspector Mary Assunta, prosecuting, told the court presided over by Mr Charles Asiedu, that on January 22, 2004, Anorvey bought 2,000 cedis worth of banku from a food vendor at Baatsona but failed to pay after eating.
She said later in the evening, the food seller went to demand her money, but Anorvey became angry on seeing her, resulting into misunderstanding between them, which later degenerated into a fight. The court heard that during the fight, Mr Yaw Mensah, an uncle of the food vendor, rushed to rescue her niece but Anorvey turned his anger on him and hit him on the head with a pestle till he became unconscious. Chief Inspector Assunta said the banku seller also became sick and “started behaving strangely” and was referred to the Pantang Psychiatric Hospital where she was admitted for three weeks.
