Kumawuhene laid to rest

Kumawu (Ash), Nov.2, GNA – Barima Asumadu Sakyi II, Paramount Chief of Kumawu Traditional Area, was on Thursday night buried at the royal mausoleum in Kumawu.

The late chief, who died at the 37 Military Hospital on July 11, was laid in state for four days and before the burial a thanksgiving service was held for him.

Barima Asumadu Sakyi, 66, who was a member of the National House of Chiefs, reigned for 33 years and is survived by a wife and 17 children. Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama led a government delegation to file past the body. The delegation included ministers, members of parliament, and district chief executives and some New Patriotic Party members. Former President Jerry John Rawlings and some members of the National Democratic Congress also filed past the body. The government delegation presented drinks and 1,500 Ghana Cedis to the bereaved family.

Paramount chiefs and sub-chiefs who filed past the body made donations to the family.

There were tributes from the Kumawu Traditional Council, Queen of Kumawu, the widow, the children, the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, the National House of Chiefs, Chief of Morso and the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church of Kumawu.

The Kumawu Traditional Council, Akwamu, Gyaase, Adonten, Ankobea, Benkum, Nifa and the Akyeame and all the Traditional Council members swore to the late chief while he laid in state. Nana BI-Kusi Appiah, Paramount Chief of Manso-Nkwanta, who represented Asantehene and Asanteman, filed past the body and later presented drinks and other items to the family.
