Kumasi, May 11, GNA-The Kumasi Metropolitan Directorate of Health Services has recorded 105.5 per cent in the second round of the National Immunisation Day (NID) against poliomyelitis held in Kumasi from April 6 to 10.
Out of its target of 332,369 children, a total of 350,627 children under five years were immunised.
Dr Joseph Oduro, Kumasi Metropolitan Director of Health Services, made these known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi on Wednesday.
He said in the Vitamin ‘A’ supplementation exercise, a total of 323,282 children out of the target 299,132 children, representing 108.1 per cent was covered.
Dr Oduro said the programme was successful because there was elaborate publicity on the local radio stations, effective mobilisation of the volunteers and other health personnel and the commitment of mothers to the exercise.
He commended the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), which realised 52 million cedis for both the first and second rounds of the programme. Dr Oduro appealed to mothers to immunise their children less than one year also against the six childhood killer diseases including tuberculosis (TB), yellow fever, tetanus and hepatitis ‘B’.
He said similar exercises would be held in October and November this year and called on mothers to patronise the programme towards the eradication of poliomyelitis completely from the country.
