Kumasi, Dec 15, GNA- Kumasi High School (KUHIS) has stopped the afternoon classes associated with the school, Mr Osei Tutu, the new Headmaster, announced on Sunday.
He said a hostel, which was being run by the school outside the school compound, had also been closed.
The headmaster said these measures are aimed at instilling discipline in the school since image had sunk very low. Addressing the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meeting in Kumasi, Mr Osei Tutu regretted that KUHIS had over the years taken on a bad image and reputation for indiscipline to the extent that a lot of decent-minded parents would not let their children attend the school. He attributed part of the problem to parents who come begging when their children were either punished or disciplined for various offences committed by some students.
Mr Osei Tutu said he was determined to reverse this trend to restore the school’s good image and warned that in his attempt to bring back discipline, he will not hesitate to apply sanctions against offending students and asked parents whose children will fall foul of the law never attempt to plead for leniency.
He, therefore, asked parents to ensure that their wards, especially those in form three attended classes regularly to be registered for the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE).
On the result of this year’s SSSCE, the headmaster said out of 651 candidates who sat, 510 passed in eight to six subjects, 132 passed in five to two subjects while nine failed completely.
Mr Osei Tutu expressed disappointment at the poor attendance of parents to the meeting and said under the present educational system, PTAs played a major role in the development of schools. He suggested to the association to institute appropriate sanctions against parents who refuse to attend meetings.
