Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has to date not received his ex gratia, his spokesperson, Frank Agyekum, has said. Consequently, he buys his own fuel, pays his own staff, bears maintenance cost of his vehicles and is using his home as an office,” the spokesperson told the Times in reaction to media reports that some Members of Parliament had been paid their ex-gratia, and the ex-President left out.
“The situation is not the best”, Mr Agyekum said and added that former President Kufuor was not happy about what was happening.
As to whether the ex-President intended writing to government to demand his ex gratia, he said, “it is not for the ex-President to do so”.
The constitution, he said, demanded that “Parliament approves the remunerations and benefits of the Executive and vice versa.”
Mr Agyekum said at the moment, “we are waiting for Parliament to say what is due the ex-President”. “As we speak, he is not enjoying any benefit from the state; no vehicles, no office, his staff is not paid by government and vehicles have not been provided for his security,” he said.
