Korle-Bu realises One Billion cedis from Endowment fund

Accra, Jan. 26, GNA – Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, Chief Executive Officer of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on Monday said about One Billion Cedis has so far bean realised from the 500 Billion Cedis Endowment Fund for the hospital.

The fund, was set up two years ago, to realise the money within the next five years to provide basic equipment and infrastructure for an effective and efficient health care delivery.

He said some of the money realised would be used for rehabilitation works on the Medical block, which had began. The block was closed down recently due to its poor state. Professor Frimpong-Boateng announced this when Mr Kwesi Adu-Amankwah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress(TUC) of Ghana presented a cheque for 50 million cedis to the Endowment Fund in Accra.

He said work was on-going on the hospital’s administration block, the nurses quarters and the hospital roads, which are in deplorable state.

The Chief Executive Officer said some of the monies realised were being used to construct a fence wall around the hospital’s land to ward off encroachers who had already taken about 30 percent of the land. He said plans were far advanced to build mother’s hostel, to cater for pregnant mothers and female patients admitted at the hospital. Professor Frimpong-Boateng said the hospital had constructed its own incinerator to manage all waste generated by the community, adding, “rubbish bins would also be placed at vantage points for patients at the hospital.”

Mr Alex Arhin Secretary to the Fund said about 1.5 billion cedis were pledged by various organizations, institutions and individuals during the Hospital’s donors conference two years ago. He urged those institutions and individuals who pledged to honour them to enable the hospital authorities to carry out more expansion works.

Mr Arhin said the Obstetrics and Gynaecology theatre would also be rehabilitated, in addition to the provision of a club house for the doctors and staff to relax after work.
