KNUST Hospital to train specialists

Kumasi, Aug. 21, GNA – The management of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Hospital, has been granted accreditation to train physician and surgical specialists. The Medical and Dental Council of Ghana gave the accreditation to train House Officers in Obstetrics/Gynaecology, Surgery and Dentistry while Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons granted the accreditation to train Residents in Surgery.

Dr Yaw Bio, Medical Director of the hospital announced this when he led a team of 12 International Health Care Volunteers from the USA to pay courtesy call on Professor Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwa, Vice-Chancellor of KNUST in Kumasi.

The team made up of two international medical practitioners, two general surgical oncologists, three obstetrician/gynaecologists, a gynaecologist, two anaesthetics and two student volunteers would be in the country for two weeks.

Dr Bio said last year, the team conducted 28 surgeries and 30 endoscopy cases at the hospital. Professor James Aikins, an Associate Professor in Obstetrics/Gynaecology at Robert Johnson Medical School in USA and leader of the delegation on behalf of the team presented a defibrillator (a heart restarting machine) valued at about 22,000 dollars to the hospital.

He said it was their widow’s mite towards the treatment of heart diseases most of which needed urgent medical response to save lives. Professor Adarkwa, expressed appreciation for their efforts to support the hospital and Ghana. He said last year’s visit marked the beginning of a bi-lateral collaboration for their mutual benefit.
