The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, (KMA), says it will employ the services of school children to plant a million trees under its “Kumasi Urban Forestry Project”.
The project was initiated by the KMA Chief Executive, Mr. Kojo Bonsu, to restore the one-time greenery that earned Kumasi the Garden City accolade.
The initiative, which the Assembly is embarking on in collaboration with the Forestry Commission, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the Parks and Gardens, is to plant one million trees in the metropolis by 2017.
Some seedlings that can withstand harsh weather conditions are being nursed for the exercise. The trees are expected to be planted on driveways, school compounds, along ceremonial routes and some selected open spaces in the city. Five hundred of the trees will be planted along the Asokwa Interchange to the Anloga Junction this year.
Public Relations officer at the KMA, Godwin Nyame told Ultimate Radio all major roads including “the Santasi – Ahenema Kokoben roads, the Anloga by-pass and other roads within the metropolis will all benefit from this project.”
He indicated that a committee has already been inaugurated by the Mayor, Kojo Bonsu, to oversee the project.
