Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has expressed his desire for an extended pre-tournament camp as Ghana prepares for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The Swede, who guided the Queens to a bronze medal at the last edition in Morocco, believes a longer training period will be crucial to improving the team’s performance at next year’s tournament.
Speaking to Joy Sports, Björkegren said he hopes the team can spend “a couple of weeks” together before heading to the tournament.
“I would love it if we could stay together for a couple of weeks before the tournament starts,” he said. “That time really helps us when we can spend more time training, meeting, and getting together.”
The coach noted that during the previous WAFCON, Ghana had limited preparation time, making it difficult to build rhythm and understanding within the squad.
“Otherwise, it’s difficult when you only have like two or three trainings and you have just two games,” he added. “That holy time will make the difference if we can have it.”
The Black Queens’ qualification marks their return to the continental stage after missing the 2022 edition. Björkegren and his team will begin their next phase of preparations with a friendly against England on December 2, as they continue building momentum for the tournament.
