The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has taken delivery of two life-saving beds, to help enhance paediatric care.
The beds were donated by Toyota Ghana Limited, in response to an appeal made to it by the facility.
Professor Emmanuel Addo-Yobo, Head of the Child Health Directorate, KATH, said the beds were a welcomed relief, and appealed for more support by way of equipment and logistics supply.
This, he said, was necessary, giving the rising number of cases seen at the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of the nation’s second largest referral hospital.
The relatively young unit, set up only five months ago, he noted, was responding well and showing good progress in the treatment of children in need of critical emergency and intensive care.
He said the unit had already saved 58 lives that could have been lost, but for the quality of care and treatment received.
Prof Addo-Yobo stated that, the Unit, although small, was serving critical health care needs of children in the West African sub-region, adding that it was both capital and labour intensive, and therefore required huge investment.
He hailed Toyota Ghana for the beds, and invited other organisations, institutions and individuals to be part of the effort of improving the care for children with critical health needs.
Mr Tetsuya Suematsu, the Managing Director of Toyota Ghana, said the donation was part of the company’s corporate social responsibility and that protecting and promoting the health of children was important, because they were the future leaders of the country.
“The gesture is a demonstration of Toyota Ghana’s commitment to a healthy tomorrow, which it has been doing over the years,” he added.
