KATH launches foundation to support sick babies

The Mother and Baby Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), the nation’s second largest referral facility, has launched a foundation to provide lifeline to babies born to poor parents.

The “Little Steps Foundation” seeks to help stop the situation where kids die from preventable diseases because of the economic situation of their families.

Dr Gyikua Plange-Rhule, Head of the Unit, said at the launch of the foundation that the body would fund the medical bills of a day to two month old babies.

She described as deeply troubling, seeing babies endure so much pain and even die all because their family had no money.

The health personnel at the Unit had through voluntary contributions raised GH?1,000 to serve as seed money for the foundation and invited the public to support.

Dr Plange-Rhule said there have been many instances where the hospital footed the bills of less-privileged babies – paid for laboratory investigations, X-ray and ultra-sound scan.

She pointed out that every child has a God-given potential and has the right to life and therefore their health must receive priority attention from the society.

She appealed to individuals and organisations to identify with the noble cause of saving lives by donating to the foundation.

The step taken by the Unit has received tremendous applause especially by mothers and seen as an intervention that could drastically reduce the child mortality rate.
