Kadjebi to benefit from an integrated sanitation scheme

Ho, Feb. 17, GNA – The people of Kadjebi in the Volta Region are to benefit from a 136,000 Euro integrated sanitation scheme with the help of the Alkemade Municipality in the Netherlands.

The scheme, which is under the Sister Cities cooperation arrangement and has the potential for waste recycling, would commence in May, this year.

Mr Kofi Adjei Ntim, Kadjebi District Chief Executive (DCE), announced this on Tuesday when he led a delegation, including the visiting Governor of Alkemade, Mr Frans Schoonderwoerd and Dutch Sanitation experts to pay a courtesy call on Mr Kwasi Owusu-Yeboa, Volta Regional Minister at Ho.

Mr Ntim said 50 percent of the capital investment outlays would be provided by the Association of Dutch Municipalities while the other half would come from the Kadjebi District Assembly and the Alkemade Municipality.

He said the scheme which would initially run for two years could be extended, adding that skip-loaders, garbage containers and dustbins would be placed at vantage points in the town.

Mr Owusu-Yeboa observed that the Kadjebi example should be replicated in other smaller towns to prevent the current enormous sanitation problems facing urban areas from drifting into the rural areas.

He condemned the habit among people to throw rubbish anywhere and hinted that the Volta Regional Co-ordinating Council (VRCC) was considering a meeting of District Chief Executives in the region to find ways of dealing with plastic waste disposal. The Minister suggested that nearby towns such as Asato and Menusu should be joined to Kadjebi to benefit from the scheme.
