June 3 disaster: Family disputes delaying compensation – MP

Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, Nii Armah Ashietey in whose constituency the twin flood and fire disaster happened at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Goil filling station in June 2015, has blamed disputes in families of victims as a major setback to paying compensation to all victims.

Accra Mayor Dr. Oko Vanderpuije on Friday during the memorial service for the victims disclosed that 108 victims of the flood and fire disaster in Accra last year have been compensated.

“108 families have been taken care of. We are a people who care and recognizing and noticing that members of our families were affected, we put into action a plan to identify our dead brothers and sisters.”

According to him, city authorities are still going through the necessary processes to compensate the remaining victims.

Ghana was thrown into a state of mourning after a tragic flood and fire disaster which claimed the lives of over 152 people following an explosion on that eventful Wednesday.

The Goil Filling Station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra became the site of a cruel catastrophe after a gas explosion left charred remains of persons who had sought refuge from the floods in the area.

Hours of heavy rains on June 3, 2015 coupled with an explosion at the GOIL Fuel Station at the Nkrumah Circle in Accra claimed over 150 lives and injured about 154 persons.

But Hon. Nii Armah Ashietey has stated that since money is at stake one has to be sure whom the money is going to, hence the seeming delay in compensating the victims.

“There are some cases where there are disputes among families, who and who should get it..I mean is it this family or that family. This is a major problem, you have to be careful about who you give the money to, so that has not also helped matters. “
