IRS urged to ensure release of VIT tickets in time

Mankessim (C.R), Oct. 27, GNA – A group of transport owners at Mankessim in the Central Region, have appealed to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to ensure that Vehicle Income Tax (VIT) stickers are released for sale about a week to the end of each quarter.

Mr. Kwesi Baffoe, an Executive member of Mankessim Number Three branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and a spokesman for the group said this would ensure compliance by all drivers. He said the situation where the stickers were put on sale days after the beginning of the new quarter had been causing some inconveniences to drivers and transport owners as the stickers were released quarterly.

Mr Baffoe said the police should be restrained to allow about two week’s grace period between each quarter before arresting defaulters. Making the appeal through the Ghana News Agency at Mankessim at the weekend, he urged officials of the IRS to clear the air on broken down vehicles at mechanics workshops with regard to what the owners should do about the stickers.

He said the present situation where some personnel of the IRS demanded accident reports from police or affidavits from commissioners of oaths was embarrassing their members.

Mr. Baffoe appealed to the IRS to remove bottlenecks, which could create room for individuals to exploit the situation to their own advantage.
