Investigate military recruitment – Rawlings

Former President Jerry John Rawlings and founder of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the Mahama led-administration to, as a matter of urgency, institute investigations into the recruitment process of military personnel in the country.

To the former army officer, the conduct of some security officers especially in the military raises lots of concerns, hence the need to examine the enlisting process of personnel.

The former president made the suggestion when addressing the Volta Regional House of Chiefs in Ho on Wednesday.

He stressed that military officers must be passionate and committed to rendering selfless service, and not to lord over civilians.

He made reference to an incident in the Northern region emphasizing, “Where there was a demonstration, there were about three or four soldiers who were lined up and when the demonstrators were moving one of the soldiers shot a demonstrator and these soldiers took a position using him [shot demonstrator] as a defense against the crowd.”

“In my time that wouldn’t have happened, how often didn’t I tell our brother to investigate some of these recruitments?”
