Injunction on Madina-Abokobi Constituency election

Accra, Oct. 4, GNA – An Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday issued an order to restrain the Madina-Abokobi Constituency Executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from holding the Constituency Delegates’ Conference scheduled for October 8.

This followed a writ filed by two members of the Party, Mr Kwasi Darko and Mr Gordon Sarpong-Osei against the Regional Headquarters of the NPP and the Constituency Chairman, Mr Kofi Asante. The Court directed the Executive not to hold any elections to elect a new Constituency Executives until the final determination of the suit. The Court, presided over by Mr Iddrisu Mahama, further restrained the respondents from doing any other business with the aim of maintaining the current Constituency Executives. Mr Darko and Mr Sarpong-Osei, both of Ritz Hotel, Madina in Accra, filed the writ on September 29, pleading with the Court to grant an injunction against the October 8 Constituency Elections until the right procedures as enshrined in the Party’s Constitution were followed. The case was adjourned to October 11.

The Plaintiffs alleged that on September 17, Mr Asante called a meeting and told them that due to time constraint he (Mr Asante) decided to use the old Chairmen, whose tenure of office had expired, to conduct the forthcoming elections.

“Some of the old delegates have travelled while others also died but Mr Asante single-handedly decided to replace those people.” They claimed that Mr Asante also did not allow them to ask questions during the meeting and when he opened nomination, he prevented some people, who showed interest, from contesting the election. Mr Darko and Sarpong-Osei also accused Mr Asante of hiding the constituency photo album, which contained pictures of the various polling station chairmen, thereby depriving other contestants from knowing the delegates. 4 Oct. 05
