Tamale, Aug 19, GNA – Dr. Patrick Bompoh, the Ghana Health Service HIV Focal Person in the Northern Region, has blamed the spread of HIV/AIDS on the increasing rate of promiscuity and immorality in the country.
He said the situation was compounded by people who make their living through sexual activities.
Dr. Bompoh was addressing a one-day workshop on HIV/AIDS in Tamale on Wednesday.
He said Koforidua and Agormanya were the highest ranked urban areas of the HIV/AIDS with infection rate of 5.8 each while the Nalerigu was the least infected with infection rate of 1.0.
Dr. Bompoh said North Tongu was the least rural infection area with 0.7 while the Fanteakwa was the highest with infection rate of 4.0, adding that the Northern Region also has an infection rate of 2.0.
He said among every 100 pregnant women who are tested in the Tamale metropolis, four are found to be infected with the disease.
He expressed the fear that most people were not doing the voluntary counselling and testing, saying testing to know one’s status was the best.
Mr Bompoh said 80-90 percent of infected persons get the disease through sexual intercourse.
