Atuobikrom(E/R), June 6, GNA – The Hunger Project (THP), Ghana, has granted a 270-million-cedi credit facility to two newly inaugurated women cooperative credit unions, in the Kwahu South and Kwahu West districts for disbursement to 500 beneficiaries engaged income generating activities.
The Country Director of THP, Dr Naana Agyeman Mensah, announced this, at Atuobikrom during the inauguration of the unions, which are based at Atuobikrom and Nsuta/Aweregya.
She urged beneficiaries of the facility to ensure regular payment to widen the network The African Director of the Project, Dr Fitigu Tadesse, said the formation of the two credit unions would ensure the eradication of hunger and poverty in the communities within the shortest possible time. He said since credit facilities were the engine for development, the unions should grant the facilities to more women and their male counterparts to expand their economic activities to enhance their living standards.
The Kwahu West District Coordinating Director, Mr Agyei Boahene said the activities of the THP would go a long way to supplement Government’s poverty reduction programme.
He said the District Assembly would assist the unions with part of the Poverty Alleviation Fund and the Social Investment Fund to enable them establish cottage industries to process some of their agricultural produce for export.
The New York based Vice President of the THP, Mrs Jennifer Thompson, and the country directors of the Project from Ethiopia, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Uganda and Malawi witnessed the ceremony.
