Nana Adjei Twinin I, national president of the Ghana Hotels Association has asked government agencies to pay their bills at hotels promptly, since the long delays create problems between the industry and the VAT secretariat.
He was speaking at the association first quarterly meeting of the year yesterday at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra.
Among other concerns he talked about were poor roads to hotels, which discourage tourists and lack of directional signs. He said the Ghana Tourist Board should do something about these.
Nana Adjei Twinin suggested that the government should set aside, a percentage of the VAT the hotels collect as a revolving fund for them, with low interest rates to enable the majority of their members to expand their facilities. He also asked for international funding in promoting the hotel industry.
The Deputy Executive Director, Operations of the Ghana Tourist Board, Mr. E.V. Hagan said the hotel industry and the private sector should improve their performance. He stressed the importance of the role of hotels to the promotion of tourism. He said personnel in the industry should be well trained to give out good service. Marketing skills should also be emphasised.
