Ho, Jan. 18, GNA – Residents of Ho last night had little or no sleep due to rumours of an imminent earthquake across the country. Many people vacated their homes for the streets while others spent the night gallivanting around their homes. By midnight, the streets were flooded with people who had vacated their rooms for safety.
At the Ho SSNIT Flats, people were seen running down the stairs as fast as their feet could carry them, some shouting for others to quit their rooms. A middle aged man was seen carrying his three children and pulling his sick wife down the stairs to “safety”.
At Workers’ Estate, people were reportedly seen carrying some properties including televisions and radios to nowhere. The fear of the disaster lived on until the voice of Mr Samuel Ablakwa Okudzeto, a Deputy Minister of Information, was heard on Joy FM, an Accra based FM station dispelling the rumours at about 0530 hours. At 0630 hours, a man popularly known as Sampson who lives at the SSNIT Flats insisted he still wanted to be out of his room until mid-day to be sure of his safety having watched the severity of the Haiti disaster on television. It is unclear how and where the rumour came from.
