Highway Authority Educates On Road Tolls

Accra, (Greater Accra) 30 Oct.,

The Ghana Highway Authority has launched an educational campaign for motorists to know who qualifies to be exempted from the payment of tolls at highways booths. Mr. B.L.T. Sakibu, Chief Executive of GHA, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Accra today that this is meant to set all motorists at ease as regards their responsibilities in the payment of tolls. According to the GHA, government vehicles with GV registration number plate, military, police and fire service vehicles, government ambulances, vehicles owned by the judicial service and diplomatic vehicles flying national flags are exempted from paying tolls. However, government vehicles shall not include those owned by public corporations and statutory boards, including State Transport Corporation, Electricity Company of Ghana, Ghana water and Sewerage Corporation, OSA Company, Volta River Authority, Ghana Telecom and Ghana Postal Services Company. ”Motorists are reminded that penalty for non-payment is an on-the-spot fine of 100 times the toll avoided or prosecution,” GHA said. The chief executive said the GHA has embarked on a ”vehicle counting and categorisation” exercise to enable the authority to determine an approximate amount of money expected to be collected by those working in the booths. The exercise involves the categorisation of all articulated trucks, cars, buses and motor cycles by ”applying the law of average to give the authority how much revenue they are to collect.”
