Help check indiscipline in the construction industry

Winneba (C/R), Feb. 16, GNA – Urban and Area Councils have been urged check the mounting indiscipline in the construction industry to curb the practice whereby people build houses and structures in water ways and encroach on government lands to prevent some “man-made” disasters, which lead to the destruction of property and loss lives. They should also check the use of “land-guards” especially in urban areas and play a key role in the mutual health insurance education programme to ensure the attainment of its objectives.

Mr. Kwesi Esseku, Presiding Member of the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Assembly made the call when he inaugurated the reconstituted 30-member Winneba Urban Council under the chairmanship of Mr. James Paa Panyin Derban.

Mr. Esseku said so far, seven out of the eight urban and area councils in the district had been inaugurated within the past 40 days, adding that, the last one would be inaugurated at Awutu-Obrachire next week.

He charged the members participate actively in revenue collection and to educate the people on government policies and programmes designed to promote good governance, the rule of law and development.

The Presiding Member assured members of local government structures in the area of the District Assembly’s preparedness to assist them with the required material and other support to enable them to work satisfactorily.

He said the government would not turn a deaf ear and a blind eye over the provision of funds and other resources that would promote the work of constitutionally-established structures in view of the vital role the sub-structures play to supplement the work of district assemblies.

The Presiding Member charged members of area and urban councils in the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District to initiate programmes to improve the lot of the people to lesson the burden on the assembly.

Mr. Paa-Panyin Derban thanked members of the council for the trust, confidence and faith they had put in him and promised to seek divine direction, guidance and wisdom to enable him to live up to expectation. He called for co-operation, support and effective teamwork from the members to ensure maximum mobilisation of the available manpower, material and financial resources in the area for rapid development.
