Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko to meet in Ghana’s 2026 Democracy Cup

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has sanctioned the 2026 Democracy Cup, which will feature a meeting between Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko at Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

The fixture is scheduled for Friday, 28 August 2026, with kick-off at 16:00. It will be organised by the Parliament of Ghana as part of events marking 32 years of parliamentary democracy in the country.

Both Ghanaian clubs have agreed to take part in the third edition of the competition, setting up a highly anticipated contest between two of Ghana’s most historic football sides.

The approval means the match has received official sanction from the country’s football governing body. Parliament will oversee the organisation of the event, which combines a celebration of Ghana’s democratic development with a major domestic football fixture.

Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko are among the best-known clubs in Ghana, and their participation will give the 2026 Democracy Cup a prominent place in the programme of commemorative activities. The match will be played in Kumasi at Baba Yara Sports Stadium, with the scheduled start time set for 4:00pm.

The GFA said the event would contribute to the commemoration of Ghana’s parliamentary democracy while also bringing together two clubs with a long-standing place in the country’s football history.

The Football Association also congratulated Parliament for its role in strengthening Ghana’s democratic institutions. Its acknowledgement included Parliament’s support for the development and promotion of football in Ghana.

The 2026 fixture will be the third edition of the Democracy Cup. The competition’s latest staging will therefore combine the anniversary programme with a contest involving Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, whose participation has now been confirmed by both clubs.

Details of the match officials have not yet been announced. The GFA said it would name the officials for the fixture at a later date.

With the date, venue and participating clubs confirmed, attention now turns to the organisation of the event and the eventual announcement of the match officials. The contest will take place in Kumasi on 28 August 2026, as part of Parliament’s activities to mark 32 years of parliamentary democracy in Ghana.
