A fresh survey by Global InfoAnalytics has placed Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu, ahead of other high-profile names in the race to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into the 2028 general elections.
The poll shows Mr. Iddrisu commanding 30% support, putting him ahead of NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who polled 24%, and Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who garnered 18%.
Former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah followed with 10%, while North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa registered 8%. Other potential aspirants, including Eric Opoku, Joshua Alabi, Armah-Kofi Buah, and Kwame Awuah-Darko, each secured 2%, while Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah received 1%. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije did not make a significant showing in the poll.
Alternative scenarios in the study further highlight Mr. Iddrisu’s dominance. In a three-way race excluding Dr. Forson, he extended his lead to 45%, compared with Mr. Asiedu Nketia’s 37% and Mr. Debrah’s 18%. Among NDC supporters, his backing rose to 47%, with particularly strong appeal in swing regions where he recorded 48% support.
However, the landscape changes significantly without Haruna Iddrisu in the mix. In that case, Mr. Asiedu Nketia emerges in front with 40%, closely followed by Dr. Forson at 38%, and Mr. Debrah at 22%. Among the party’s core base, the contest becomes nearly tied—Asiedu Nketia with 42% and Ato Forson with 41%.
Interestingly, Dr. Forson’s strongest performance comes from swing regions, where he overtakes Mr. Asiedu Nketia with 47% support against 38%.
The poll suggests that while Haruna Iddrisu is currently the frontrunner, his absence could spark a tight two-way contest between Asiedu Nketia and Ato Forson, potentially reshaping the NDC’s succession dynamics ahead of 2028.
