Accra, April 28 GNA – Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, Minister of Works and Housing, on Thursday tasked the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to complete all remedial works at the Dome Water Booster Station within three weeks to enable it to start rationing water to Taifa, Kwabenya and surrounding communities.
He also urged the residents of those areas to bear with Government in finding a lasting solution to their acute water problem. Mr Owusu-Agyemang gave the directive when he paid a visit to the GWCL Booster Station at Dome, near Accra.
The Booster Station, which has a capacity of 227,300 litres per day, was rehabilitated a few months ago to pump water to residents of Taifa and surrounding areas, who for a long time had had to purchase water from tankers at exorbitant prices.
Mr owusu-Agyemang, who was accompanied by the Managing Director of GWCL, Mr Samuel O. Lamptey, said the Government was doing everything possible to provide good drinking water to both urban and rural communities.
He called on the GWCL to explore the possibility of sinking more boreholes fitted with pumps in the area to augment the current water system.
Mr Lamptey pledged that the project would be completed on time to supply water to the residents, who had been without a regular source of water supply for the past 10 years.
He said the GWCL needed a lot of resources to expand its supply and distribution networks, especially to the new settlements in the Accra Metropolis.
Mr Lamptey said the Accra-Tema area now required about 545.5 million litres of water a day, but the Weija and Kpong pumping stations could supply 372.8 litres of water.
Professor Mike Ocquaye, Minister of Energy and Member of Parliament for the area, expressed optimism about the project and expressed the hoped that it would alleviate some of the sufferings of the people. He called on the Ministry of Road Transport to rehabilitate some of the roads and bridges in the area.
