The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) is calling for at least a new water treatment plant in Tamale to be able to serve the water needs of the people. The GWCL says:
“Tamale needs new plants to support the area because the area is developing. More infrastructural developments are taking place. The population is also increasing”.
These were expressed by the Northern Regional Communications Director of the Company, Nicolas Nii Abbey, on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa Monday.
Nii Abbey was reacting to reports of acute water shortage in the Tamale Metropolis. The shortage is said to be in its sixth day as residents of the Northern Region capital have been grappling with it. It is almost two weeks in some areas.
Dohin-naayili, Kukuo, Koblimahigu, Aboabo, Changli, Jakarayili, Aboabo, Zogbeli and Lamashegu are some of the affected areas. Residents fear it could affect the upcoming Eid ul-Fitr celebration on Wednesday, July 6 if not solved.
Nii Abbey explained that even though the cause of the shortage has been solved, Tamale and other parts of the three northern regions need more treatment plants to avert a future shutdown of water plants.
He cited that the shortage was as a result of the shutdown of the only treatment which serves the entire Northern Region.
