Guinea Worm Eradicated From Sekyere West?

Mampong (Ash), June 20, – The Sekyere West District Assembly, in collaboration with World Vision International (WVI), has eradicated Guinea Worm from its part of the Afram Plains. According to Mr Ebenezer Akuoko-Frimpong, the District Chief Executive, there are no reported cases of the disease in the district. He attributed the breakthrough in the control of the disease to the provision of potable water for the people. Mr Akuoko-Frimpong said every community in the district that has a population of up to 300 people, now has access to good drinking water. He said 88 bore-holes out of which 55 are fitted with hand pumps have been provided through the collaborative effort of the assembly and WVI. Twenty-five per cent of the cost of drilling each borehole was borne by the assembly and the remainder was taken care of by WVI, with the communities providing communal labour. Mr Akuoko-Frimpong said apart from the boreholes the assembly has also sunk a number of hand-dug wells for the communities.
