GRIDCo investigates transformer fire that disrupted power in Accra

The Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) is investigating a fire at its Mallam Substation that disrupted electricity supplies to parts of Accra in the early hours of Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

The incident happened at about 2:36 a.m. after a fault caused one of the transformers at the facility to catch fire, GRIDCo said in a statement.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) attended the scene and contained the blaze before extinguishing it, according to the company.

GRIDCo said electricity had been restored in some of the affected areas, while work continued to reconnect customers who remained without power as quickly as possible.

Its engineers are investigating what caused the fault. The company has also begun arrangements to replace the damaged transformer as soon as possible.

GRIDCo apologised for the disruption and thanked affected customers and stakeholders for their patience and understanding.
