The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has launched a programme in Koforidua to provide all its vehicles with dust bins to help improve sanitation in the country.
The programme, according to the National Chairman of the GPRTU, Alhaji Yaw Manu, would include distribution of dustbins to every branch of the union across the country, to be placed in all passenger vehicles for passenger’s use in support of the national sanitation day campaign.
He explained that, the attitude of some passengers, who throw rubbish out from moving vehicles, was not good and so the GPRTU has decided to provide the dustbins in the vehicles for passengers.
He said once the programme has been launched, every vehicle leaving the lorry station would be required to have the dustbin or be prevented from loading and urged the drivers to ensure that, their mates inform the passengers of the dustbins in the vehicles.
The National Chairman indicated that, the GPRTU was in talks with the other transport unions such as the PROTOA and the Cooperatives to do same, to ensure a holistic approach in dealing with the bad sanitation practice at the lorry stations.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Antwi-Boasaiako Sekyere and his deputy, Ms Mavis Frimpong, jointly launched the programme and lauded the GPRTU for taking the initiative to support government’s National Sanitation Day.
He hoped that, with the involvement of all stakeholders, such as the GPRTU, the national sanitation day programme would achieve the intended purpose and urged the Union to rally its members to support programmes for national development.
Dr Kwaku Acheampong, the New Juaben Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), advised the drivers to always ensure that, their mates inform passengers about the litter bins to achieve the maximum results.
