The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has distanced itself from reports of a 20 percent increase in transport fares announced by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).
Speaking in an interview, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, said the union was surprised by the announcement, insisting it was not part of any consultations leading to the decision.
“We only got the news yesterday, and we were surprised. We were not involved in any discussions or decision-making process regarding this fare increment by the GRTCC,” Mr. Amoah revealed.

He explained that transport fare adjustments are usually agreed upon through broad consultations involving all relevant parties, including the Ministry of Transport.
“Normally, we sit at the table with all stakeholders, including the Ministry of Transport, before any decision on fare adjustments is made. But in this case, we were not part of it,” he added.
Mr. Amoah disclosed that GPRTU will soon meet with the Ministry of Transport to discuss the issue and chart the way forward. He also raised doubts about the practicality of implementing the proposed increment.
“As it stands, the increment announced by the GRTCC, which is supposed to take effect from August 8, 2025, may not be possible,” he said.
While not ruling out future fare hikes, he stressed that any such move must follow due process.
“There is a possibility of transport fare increases in the future, but such decisions must go through the right processes,” Mr. Amoah concluded.
