….but support efforts to settle them – Kufuor
President John Agyekum Kufuor on Monday said government would not interfere in chieftaincy disputes but support efforts by factions for amicable solution to them.
He said, ” government is disturbed by the chieftaincy dispute at Osu which is affecting its development and would support efforts to solve them but not interfere in the dispute as government is bared by the Constitution to do so. You should resolve the dispute and live together as a proud people”.
President Kufuor said this when the Osu Mankralo, Nii Arko Nortey II led a delegation of chiefs and elders from the Osu Traditional Council to pay a courtesy call on him at the Castle, Osu.
He said though Osu is an old township, it could be turned into an attractive tourist area with unity in purpose.
“You are sitting on wealth and only the disunity among you is preventing you from developing it for the people. You cannot benefit from the wealth when you are at loggerheads with each other. Resolve it quickly for visitors to the area to see”.
President Kufuor said efforts would be made to solve some of the problems affecting the people such as a building for their Traditional Council, dredging of the Clottey Lagoon, a new cemetery site and the possibility of a percentage of gate proceeds at the stadium which is a national asset to the Council.
Nii Adjovi Nortey II, Osu Dzasetse and the Spokesman of the delegation said it was to pay homage and officially welcome President Kufuor as the tenant to the Castle.
He appealed to government to set up a Committee to solve the Osu chieftaincy dispute, allocate one of the bungalows in the area to the Council for their offices, dredging of the Clottey Lagoon, a new site for the Osu cemetery which is almost full and give a percentage of the gate proceeds at the stadium to the Council.
