Government to support E-governance

Accra, June 3 GNA – Mr Samuel N. Woode, Chairman of the Public Services Commission (PSC), on Thursday called for the strengthening of the capacity of the Commission to ensure sustainable development of the country.

Mr Woode said with the Government realising that the PSC could be used as a centre of excellence to enhance public administration and good governance decided to organise a workshop to discuss modalities and to make recommendations that would be used for soliciting financial support for projects in that direction.

Mr Wood was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at the ongoing workshop on E-Governance at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), near Accra.

Government is to use recommendations made at the consultative workshop to solicit for financial support to continue the country’s E-governance programme.

Consequently, Senior Public administrators from various State Institutions taking part in the review discussions were to come out with modalities for the draft proposal, he said.

The workshop, which is being organized by the PSC in collaboration with the National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA) of the United States of America (USA), is on the theme: “Information Technology and Governance”.

Mr Woode said the aim of the consultations was to explore how information technology could be used to enhance human resource administration and social capital formation. .

Ms Valerie Lammie, Vice Chairperson of NAPA, said the discussions were to strengthen the collaboration between the two institutions and also strengthen their official partner agreement signed in January 2004. She said the workshop would help participants to explore opportunities and possibilities of using E-governance to promote transparency and accountability in public management.

Ms Lammie said citizens’ participation in the delivery and evaluation of public services was a positive way of ensuring responsibility.

Participants included personnel from the Ministry of Communications and Technology, PSC, National Governance Programme, Ghana News Agency and Ministry of Information. 03 June 04
