Government to facilitate restoration of railway

Tinkong (E/R), Sept 28, GNA – Mr Opoku Mensah, an opinion leader at Tinkong, a farming community in the Eastern Region, has reiterated the call on the government to facilitate an urgent rehabilitation of the rail transport system to reduce the problems associated with the movement of goods, services and travellers on the roads.

He said the rail system would reduce long hours spent in traffic on the roads and also help to reduce frequent fatal road accidents and that it must therefore be given the necessary priority attention. Mr Mensah made the call when addressing community members after a communal labour to tidy the lorry park and repair a wooden bridge linking Tinkong, near Akuapem.

He said the Government should take into consideration the rapid population growth in the country and take immediate steps to develop the rail system.

Mr Mensah said when the rail transport system was remedied it would go a long way in minimising the pressure on the road network and would also enhance the growth of the nation’s economy. He stated that transportation of bulky products such as cocoa, timber, and manganese, among others, reduces the lifespan of the roads, adding that the rail system was the best for conveying commercial goods. 28 Sept 10
