Government initiates 620 development projects in E/R

Kyebi (E/R), Dec. 19, GNA – Dr Kwasi Akyem Apea-Kubi, the Eastern Regional Minister, has said that since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government took over in 2009, more than 620 infrastructural projects have been initiated in the region.

He said 431 of the projects were in the areas of educational infrastructural such as classroom blocks, dormitories, libraries, administration blocks and teachers accommodation.

Dr Apea-Kubi said it was the intention of the government to raise the standard of education to a higher pedestal through the provision of basic infrastructure.

The Regional Minister said this when he addressed this year’s Odwiratuo festival of chiefs and people of Akyem Abuakwa Traditional area at Kyebi on Saturday.

The festival was attended by people from all walks of life including diplomats, Members of Parliament, government delegation led by the Vice President, Mr John Dramani Mahama and representatives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by the party’s flag bearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Dr Apea-Kubi said since a healthy people make a healthy nation, government had initiated over 74 health and sanitation projects in the region at the cost of nearly GH ¢ 3.0 million to enhance the current health delivery services.

He said the projects included construction of X-ray departments, laboratories, emergency wards and on the road sector, the minister said government had carried out rehabilitation and reshaping works on some of the deplorable roads in the region.

Dr Apea-Kubi said government through the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) amongst others had put in place various youth employment modules to assist the youth to acquire employable skills to the extent that 11, 650 youth in the region had been engaged in the various modules.

The Regional Minister said the region had experienced increased security threats as a result of differences of opinion and divergence of thoughts among traditional authorities.

He however commended the traditional authorities for collaborating with the government to bring development to the people in the region.

Odwiratuo festival is normally held at the end of the first three years of a new Okyehene reign at Kyebi during either December or January and is grander than the annual Odwira festival.
