Government, DANIDA to Sustain Rural Livelihood

Pamdu (B/A) The Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), in collaboration with the government, has embarked on a programme aimed at sustaining rural livelihood through the prevention of land degradation. The five-year programme, dubbed the “land and water management project”, would cover 68 communities.

It is institutionally located within the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and placed directly under the Crops Services department. The Brong-Ahafo regional director of the ministry, Mr A.A. Osei- Frimpong, announced this at the project’s information and mobilization forum at Pamdu, near Kintampo, one of the beneficiary communities. He noted that the frequent occurrence of bushfires, and soil erosion through bad farming practices continue to degrade the land resulting in the impoverishment of rural communities. Mr Osei-Frimpong said four priority districts in the region, Nkoranza, Kintampo, Techiman and Wenchi, have been selected to take part in the programme. The programme has started in Busunya and Bonsu, both in the Nkoranza district where the people are being introduced to improved land and water conservation practices. He advised the beneficiary communities to mobilise the people for the success of the programme. In an address read for him, the Kintampo District Chief Executive, Mr A.B.Amoah, said land degradation in the area is seriously affecting agricultural output, and urged the people to embrace the programme. The assembly member for the town, Prince Oduro-Boateng, who chaired the function, promised to educate the people to accept the project since it is in their interest. Gri
