Wenchi (B/A), May 16, GNA- The Wenchi District branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has ended its delegates’ conference at Wenchi, with a call on the government to expedite action on report of the Presidential Commission on Pension if released. Mr. Collins Obeng-Boaheng, acting Chairman of Brong-Ahafo GNAT, who made the call on Monday, also urged the government to ensure the upward review and prompt payment of all negotiated and approved allowances for teachers.
He urged the authorities to initiate measures to motivate teachers so that they would give of their best and asked the professionals to refrain from alcoholism, absenteeism and other negative tendencies that could effect teaching and learning.
Mr. George Amano-Kyeremeh, Wenchi District Director of Education, called on parents to enrol their children in schools to give meaning to the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education. He noted that 42 per cent of teachers in the district were not trained and called on the government to grant study leave with pay to those prepared to upgrade their skills and knowledge.
Nana Osei-Asiamah, head master of Koase Secondary Technical School, was re-elected Chairman of the association, whilst Mr. B. M. Mwankurina, Circuit Supervisor, was re-elected Vice Chairman and Mr. I. S. Nuamah retained his position as treasurer and Mr. F. Y. Al-Duon was re-elected trustee.
