Accra, Sept 10, GNA- The Australian High Commission on Friday said the Australian government’s decision to close its High Commission in Ghana in 1985 was not related to the closure of the Ghanaian High Commission in Australia in 1980.
A statement from the High Commission issued on Friday explained that a Ghana News Agency news report, which attributed the closure as a counter measure to Ghana closing its mission in Australia in 1980, was not correct.
It said the closure of the Australian High Commission was “part of a broader review and restructuring of Australia’s diplomatic representation overseas”.
The statement said the review and restructuring process involved the closing of several missions around the world, adding that diplomatic relations were, however, maintained with those countries where resident missions were closed.
“Australia’s High Commissioner in Nigeria regularly visited Ghana prior to the re-establishment of a resident mission in Accra,” it said.
