GNA and Russia to explore ways of co-operation

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) and the Russian Embassy in Ghana on Thursday agreed to explore ways of co-operation, especially in the area of exchange of news to foster good relations between the two countries.

This was the general consensus reached at a meeting between the management of the GNA and Mr Valery Orlov, Russian Ambassador in Ghana.

Mr Orlov visited the News Agency in Accra in a bid to strengthen relations between the two bodies and also to find ways to disseminate news from Russia in Ghana.

He said Russia had several news agencies including the Russian Information Agency, which transmitted news in their official language and in English on issues that bothered on economics and politics and which could be shared with other parts of the world.

Such a co-operation between the two bodies would be useful, the Ambassador said, and pledged the Embassy’s readiness to assist the GNA in that direction to enable it to inform Ghanaians accurately about issues concerning that country.

Mr Robert Kafui Johnson, General Manager, said the GNA has the widest reach in country with more than 60 subscribers made up of radio and television stations and newspapers.

He said the Agency already had agreements with Deutsche Presse Agentur (DPA) in Germany, the Chinese News Agency (Xinhua) and the Pan African News Agency (PANA) based in Senegal for the exchange of news.

Currently, the GNA is negotiating with the Nigerian News Agency for a similar co-operation.

Nana Appau Duah, Supervising Chief Editor, led Mr Orloy to tour the various sections of the Agency.
