GMWU urges members to vote massively during the run-off

Accra, Dec. 24, GNA – The Ghana Mines Workers Union (GMWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Wednesday said for the major role the union played in the attainment of independence of Ghana, members had a national duty to vote massively for their preferred candidate in the Sunday, December 28, 2008 presidential run-off.

Mr Prince Ankrah, General Secretary of GMWU said the union was concerned about the welfare of the people hence the need to go and vote for a president that would ensure peace, a pre-requisite for productivity.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra, Mr Ankrah said; “we need peace to continually be productive, making sure that the wealth of the country especially mining receipts are used for the benefit of all, especially the rural folk”. He said mining was tedious and commended the workforce and management of the mining companies for working hard to bring the industry that far, adding, “This industry continues to make a lot of money for our economy and we are very proud of that”. Mr Ankrah said the yuletide should offer them the opportunity to take stock of the past to enable them to improve upon their performances.

He advised them to spend their resources wisely during the holidays and save for the payment of their wards’ school fees the next academic year.
