GMA calls for reinstatement of Ridge Doctors

The Greater Accra Division of Ghana Medical Association (GMA) on Monday gave the Ministry of Health (MOH) up to 0900 hours on Wednesday 6th October to reinstate “all doctors legally employed by the MOH and, who have been forcibly ejected by Brig. Dan Twum from the Ridge Hospital”.

The GMA, Accra Division, said the Ministry of Health has procedures, which are followed in staff movements, “but in this case, the procedures were thrown overboard”.

In a release, signed jointly by Professor A. B. Akosa, Chairman and Dr Michael Quaye, Secretary, the Division said they will ensure that the 30 doctors expelled from the Ridge Hospital last Friday by the new military administration are reinstated at their legitimate place of work.

The release said representatives of the Ghana Registered Nurses Association (GRNA) and the Health Services Workers Union of the TUC, at an emergency meeting, condemned the procedure used by the military to expel the 30 doctors.

It also condemned the turn of events during the recording of a GTV Public Concern programme, at the National Theatre on September 30.

It said during the recording, an “organised mob of thugs” attacked the GMA members present.

“We are saddened to note that the activities of the thugs may be linked to the office of the Minister of Health.”

The release assured members of the public that GMA’s stand is in their interest and has started holding series of meetings to discuss the issue and to advise themselves accordingly.
